COSN Clinic success

I attended the COSN /CETPA one day clinic Tuesday in San Jose, CA.  First, the structure of the day was outstanding with a few workshops, some clinics, lunch and networking time.

Some of the highlights of the day for me were:

– Presentation by Deputy Superintendent Gavin Payne who said, “In this information world, kids need to distinguish between good knowledge and bad knowledge…  We need to be using the technology the help kids learn.”

–  Keith Kruger discussed “hot technologies” based on research done by COSN on emerging technologies.  One of his presenters, Stan Trevina, was from Modesto city schools in California who has been facilitating a Second Life collaboration between students in California and students in Japan (including a translator program that translates languages for the kids).  This was very cool and fascinating to me…see the project blog.

– Gary Stager talked about the power of one-to-one laptops and gave 10 reasons why we should all be doing this.  It was good to hear from one of the pioneers in the laptop field and it validated the laptop program we had begun in Clovis 10 years ago.

Steve Hargadon shared about open source solutions.  He did a great job of making “open source” understandable for those of us present.  He has put together some great websites on a variety of Open Source applications, etc.  Audio Interview wiki of people Steve has interviewed.  Open Source WikiClassroom 2.0 network.

Overall, a great day – great job COSN and CETPA.
