I have to admit that I have not taken the time to really understand “Creative Commons”. However, after reading this blogpost by Derek Baird about Creative Commons, I learned more from watching this video found at Creative Commons (you can also see their previous videos here). Very well done…and a great primer for those of us just learning about it! Here is the video – “Wanna Work Together?“:

My father and brother enjoyed Ziplining at Whistler last week as part of my relaxing vacation. Here is my first attempt at putting some video together of our experience. If you ever get a chance to do this, it was awesome and fun…even for my 80 year-old dad!
Members of the CSLA 2.0 Team met f2f for the first time since putting this program together. Here are some of our team members gathered in the AT&T Executive Briefing Center in San Francisco (Front: Connie Williams, CSLA VP of Communications; Jackie Siminutus, Library Advocate from AT&T. Back: Jamie Boston, LMT from Davis Joint Union School District, Rob Darrow, Coordinator of Libraries, Clovis Unified School District.)
Our group learned that at this point in the summer, there are 124 participants in California and another 64 people from outside of California participating. Over the next months, the members of the CSLA 2.0 Team will be presenting the SLL2.0 concept at a variety of workshops. We will have a special awards ceremony at the CSLA conference in November.
There is still time for you to join!
I attended the COSN /CETPA one day clinic Tuesday in San Jose, CA. First, the structure of the day was outstanding with a few workshops, some clinics, lunch and networking time.
Some of the highlights of the day for me were:
- Presentation by Deputy Superintendent Gavin Payne who said, “In this information world, kids need to distinguish between good knowledge and bad knowledge… We need to be using the technology the help kids learn.”
- Keith Kruger discussed “hot technologies” based on research done by COSN on emerging technologies. One of his presenters, Stan Trevina, was from Modesto city schools in California who has been facilitating a Second Life collaboration between students in California and students in Japan (including a translator program that translates languages for the kids). This was very cool and fascinating to me…see the project blog.
- Gary Stager talked about the power of one-to-one laptops and gave 10 reasons why we should all be doing this. It was good to hear from one of the pioneers in the laptop field and it validated the laptop program we had begun in Clovis 10 years ago.
- Steve Hargadon shared about open source solutions. He did a great job of making “open source” understandable for those of us present. He has put together some great websites on a variety of Open Source applications, etc. Audio Interview wiki of people Steve has interviewed. Open Source Wiki. Classroom 2.0 network.
Overall, a great day – great job COSN and CETPA.
I think I have a pretty good sense of humor. However, I’m not very good at writing jokes or putting together pictures with jokes. With the SLL2.0 23 Things, the people writing the blogs I have been following, DO have a wonderful sense of humor and insights into how to “mash up” ideas from the library with a variety of picture and image generators (See Thing 6 and Thing 10) .
- The Comet Librarian has put together an incredible poster and a cute cat that is thinking about libraries.
- At DeJong Space, Randy has created some cool library cartoons (those “Happy Feet” penguins would be proud!),
- The Book Lady has mastered the art of combining personal pictures with interesting effects and library sayings.
- The Book Case blog has learned about Flickr and MashUps, but because she is having to share a computer with 3 computers while on vacation, she will post her creations when she is back home.
As of today, we have had 10 people finish the SLL2.0 23 Things…looking forward to reading the other postings in the weeks to come!
