The future of the ebooks?

In catching up with a number of posts, I was interested to read the variety of posts and articles about the future of ebooks.  The librarian in black points us to why ebooks are bound to fail  as well as sharing how many public libraries are now using netflix for video check out and netlibrary for ebook checkouts.

Will Richardson shows us the possible future (and present) of magazines online.

Check out the latest issue of “Blogger and Podcaster” and be sure to see how the pages turn!  This is pretty cool!! I wonder if this is how all magazines will be online in the future?

Web 2.0 and School 2.0 diagrams

It is great to see more revised diagrams of web 2.0 and school 2.0 as a result of keynotes and conferences attended by Steve Hargadon and David Warlick a few weeks back.

First, Steve Hargadon, following his keynote at the California Central Valley CUE gathering, reflected about school 2.0 and added some nice diagrams following his keynote:

Web 2.0 has really been the flowering of new relationships between individuals and businesses, and reflects new ways of thinking that the technology has facilitated or created.

Across the nation in central North Carolina, at the MEGA showcase conference, David Warlick wrote about the changing vision of school and teaching and learning.  Included in his post, is a diagram showing the new “literacy”, he pointed out:

“There are two things that we do know that connect directly to our current vision of school.

  1. The nature of information has changed (digital, networked, overwhelming, unconstrained)
  2. We can not clearly describe the future we are preparing our children for.

From these ideas, two demands rise.

  1. That we redefine literacy (one literacy) to reflect an increasingly digital, networked… information environment.
  2. That we teach our children to be life long learners.

It is the continuing vision of the collective people such as Steve and David that help all of us to better help to transform our thinking and the thinking of educators across the nation!

23 Things Expanding

The power of collaboration and networking is evident from the number of recent posts regarding the various iterations of 23 Things.

Jackie Siminitus over at Library Advocate explains more about our School Library 2.0 23 things and she has a 2CoolTools Blog as well.

The Librarian in Black has highlighted the various 23 Things going in California and then, of course, as she does so well, expands on the access to the 23 things by showing us a map and a list of del.icio.us links of the variety of 23 Things that have or are occurring.

Thanks also to the AASL Blog for adding to the publicity.

And, one of our first new 2.0 bloggers is Helen from Santa Barbara.  Way to go Helen!

You’re welcome to join us in our school library 2.0 23 Things!

School Library 23 Things – Join us in Ca!

A group of us from the California School Library Association have spent the past four months refining the 23 Things activities originated by Helene Blowers of the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg in North Carolina, for the school library crowd. Thanks to Jackie Siminitus and lead by Connie Williams, our new CSLA president-elect, we are going live! We are excited to roll this out primarily for California school library personnel. However, we are welcoming friends and lurkers from anywhere in the world!

Join us for School Library Learning 2.0 – it will be a summer to remember!

You are welcome to participate in many ways:

  • Join us and learn with us! We “officially” begin on June 1.
  • Look at what we’ve done and re-do it to make it your own for your school library group or organization
  • Add to our “curriculum connection” ideas on our wiki

What we’ve learned from others…and are implementing with this management iteration:

  • We have a set of “virtual cheerleaders” (2.0 leaders) who will each have a group of about 30 participants to follow, post on their blogs, email and cheer on to encourage them to complete all 23 Things.
  • We have used our CSLA online registration system to have people register so we have a list of names and email addresses.
  • We are using bloglines to keep track of our groups and will divide the group up according to our main 2.0 blog leader.
  • For the things we thought were important but didn’t exactly fit with the 23 Things experience, we created the curriculum connections wiki.
  • We will be using Moodle a bit for participants who are purchasing continuing education credit.
  • We are offering up to 2 units of continuing education credit for participants through Fresno Pacific University.

For us in California, it will be a summer to remember! We hope you’ll join us, too!!

Good to read that Doug Johnson, Joyce Valenza and others have asked about putting together a School Library 23 Things…well, here it is!
